The laboratory of Dr. Joern E. Schmitz studies SIV pathogenesis in nonhuman primates. These efforts involve investigations in the role of cellular and humoral immune responses in viral containment and studies to determine the impact of Fc receptor polymorphisms on antibody function. In addition, Dr. Schmitz heads a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation-funded consortium to develop a BCG-based AIDS vaccine.
